Hello IWS members,
We regret having to report that now the WFWS-45 Museum Exhibition has been cancelled. We had looked forward to hanging this beautiful show in the newly remodeled Idaho State Museum. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and the continued uncertainty, they cancelled the show in its entirety.
Our juror Stephen Quiller and our Team Leaders agreed that this exceptional Exhibition needed to be seen by each of you and the public, even briefly and especially at a time when spirits need lifting. We are overjoyed to report that we have partnered with our arts-minded Riverside Hotel (our original venue) to provide outreach and healing to the Gem State during this pandemic. The WFWS-45 Exhibition will be held in their spacious grand ballroom for 3 days June 5-7, 2020.
This “extraordinary exhibition for abnormal times” will have all safety protocols in place. Each painting will be displayed on its own easel, matted but not framed. Every effort will be made to protect the art including “do not cross” tape lines on carpet. Pandemic restrictions of masking and social distancing will be observed. TV, newspaper and social media coverage will promote this show as an opportunity to heal and breathe in life again amidst the pandemic through these beautiful watercolors. We will also have a People’s Choice award selected by attendees.
What you will see: We present the 100 best of the nearly 1000 entries in the 45th annual competition of the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, a world-class collection of water
media paintings. Our juror, the renowned watercolorist and author, Stephen Quiller, called this art exceptional.

“We invite you to quietly engage. Immerse yourself in the comfort of this beautiful art. Let the creativity of this show help guide your own path to the new normal. Our world has changed, but the healing qualities of art have not.”
What you won’t see: Due to the pandemic, our 2 month show was cancelled at the Idaho State Museum. The Riverside Hotel has generously partnered with us for this “Watercolors Breathe Life into the Gem State” 3 day show in the main ballroom. Social distancing and masks will be expected. Although it is customary for the host to frame the 100 winners identically for exhibition, we have not done that for this brief show, so distance from the art must also be respected.
Virtual Exhibition and Awards In addition, IWS will have the WFWS-45 Virtual Gala, Awards & Exhibition on our Idaho Watercolor Society YouTube channel, to be released on Friday, June 5th. Enjoy 2 professionally prepared videos: WFWS-45 Part 1: Welcome and Awards (which includes Stephen Quiller’s Show and Award comments). WFWS-45 Part 2: WFWS-45 Exhibition slide show and new signature members. Links will be at idahowatercolorsociety.org and on all WFWS society websites.
This WFWS-45 journey that has had many detours due to the pandemic, but not to be derailed! It will be a marvelous destination to arrive to together, safe and sound! This WFWS-45 Exhibition has unified and strengthened IWS immensely, for which we are truly pleased. We hope you will come and see this incredible show that will Breathe Life into you at this time when we all need it!
