Betty Benson Memorial Fund

By All IWS Info, Events

North Regional members began donating to a one-time award for the annual juried show, the Betty Benson Memorial Award.  The announcement did not make it into the newsletter, to get the attention we needed for fundraising, so we are passing on the word to anyone in IWS who knew Betty and would like to take part. If you would, please donate what you are comfortable with.

Please make a check out to IWS with a notation in the memo spot, “Betty Benson Memorial” and send it to me at:

IWS Annual Meeting Survey – Please Respond by March 10

By All IWS Info, Events

Fellow IWS Artists,

Your Board has become aware of an opportunity to hold our annual meeting this year in the Sawtooth Basin.  We think this is an exciting opportunity, not only because of the amazing painting options, but because the Sawtooth Basin is more centrally located than Boise and we are in hopes that this spot will draw IWS artists from across the State of Idaho.

So, here are some of the details:

·         The Annual Meeting COULD be held at Luther Heights Bible Camp at Lake Alturas, which is between Stanley and Galena Summit.  The Camp is not used that time of year, so we would have it to ourselves. (cook staff and managers on site as well)

·         The dates available are Thursday, September 2 through Sunday, September 5.

·         The total cost for artists for the weekend is $150 per person, which includes accommodations, and all meals.

·         Price also includes a guest artist who will provide painting inspiration, suggested topics for the day and lead evening critiques.

·         Luther Heights Bible Camp can accommodate 60 people.

·         Lodging accommodations are in cabins with bunk beds outfitted with mattresses.  You would need to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow.

·         Each cabin will accommodate 6 people.  (new Covid standards)

·         Each cabin has a very nice, newly renovated bathroom & shower.

·         The camp has a magnificent lodge where meals are served and where you could paint during the day.  It is also where daily critiques will be held in the evening.

·         There are two motor home spots available within the camp

·         Lake Alturas, just across the road, can accommodate 11 campsites.  NOTE:  This is Labor Day Weekend, so if you find you are interested in staying in the lakeside campsites, Alturas Inlet Campground, reservations can be made through

·         If artists utilize accommodations other than Luther Heights, the cost is $75

·         This location provides wonderful opportunities for plein air painting, hiking, boating, fishing, etc.

Please review the information above and reply to the survey below, so we know if there is sufficient interest among our members to host our Annual Meeting at this beautiful rustic location.  We need a quorum for the Annual Meeting, so if there is not sufficient interest, the Board will make plans to hold the meeting as usual in Boise.  Click on the link below to complete the survey.

For effective planning, please respond to this survey by March 10th.

Happy Painting,
Your IWS Board

2021 Rotunda Show – IWS

By All IWS Info, Events, Exhibits

It is with regret the Annual Rotunda Show has been cancelled.

I was informed yesterday the capitol building has major security concerns. Due to this, we would have fewer visitors with some restricted areas, possibly even searches if  security details felt it necessary. I believe their security protocol is privee to more information than is public.

In order to keep everyone safe, the show is cancelled.

Thank you,

IWS Annual Juried Exhibition and Workshop Special Announcement

By Events, Exhibits
Hi IWS Artists!

I just wanted to get a note out to you about our upcoming 2021 IWS Annual Juried Exhibition and Workshop in June.  While that seems a bit far away, the deadline for entering the show is a month away (March 8th on ArtCall).  Since we had no IWS show last year, we are hoping this year will be the best we have ever shown to our families, friends, and the general public!  If you haven’t started your painting yet, I encourage you to get that special reference out that you’ve always wanted to do, and put your artistic mind and hand to work!  Or if you just need to do some finishing touches on your work, these snow days are great for a meditative time at your easel.  Our Juror, Ted Nuttall, is a masterful painter as well as a great juror.  Although he paints only portraits and still life, he juries Internationally and knows all aspects of Art more than any instructor I know.  Also, he juries a little differently than others.  He can tell if an artist is a beginner or if they are working on an area in their work like composition or color theory, and will reward them for where they are, not necessarily where they want to be.  Entering shows is a great way for you to grow as an artist – to move forward with your passion of creating.

Because Ted is a friend of mine, I will not be entering this year and will sit it out as the chair of the Workshop.  I want to encourage you to enter. I am here to consult with if you need help on any part of the painting process and Carol HasBrouck Browning is available for online entry training with ArtCall (see her latest IWS post). Scott Muscolo is working hard to put together a fantastic show.  Please contact any of us if you have ANY questions.  We want you to succeed!  Be brave!  Take courage!  It’s a lot of fun to enter and you just may take home an award!
